About the Center

Staff Board Openings History Annual Reports Funders Partners Contact

The Center for Watershed Protection works to protect, restore, and enhance our streams, rivers, lakes, wetlands, and bays. We create viable solutions and partnerships for responsible land and water management so that every community has clean water and healthy natural resources to sustain diverse life.

The Center for Watershed Protection’s vision is a nation that has significantly improved the ecological and hydrological condition of its degraded water bodies and has stemmed further degradation of clean water and healthy watersheds. We believe clean water and healthy ecological systems are essential to life on earth.

We envision:

  • A national movement towards a watershed approach implemented by a network of watershed practitioners
  • Communities investing in infrastructure changes that are reflective of the social, environmental, and economic benefits of watershed protection, restoration, and enhancement
  • Land development occurring with minimal impacts to water resources
  • Individuals taking concrete steps to reduce their impact on their local watersheds

so that every community has clean drinking water, and fishable, swimmable waters that support diverse life.

Our vision is built upon our unique ability to advance, synthesize and widely disseminate watershed science by translating this knowledge into practical tools and techniques. Through our collaborative spirit and ability to integrate multiple disciplines, jurisdictions, and issues into a comprehensive watershed approach we endeavor to lead the nation in the development and implementation of the most effective stormwater and watershed management practices.

The Center has over 20 enthusiastic professional staff comprised mainly of watershed analysts, environmental planners, engineers and biologists. Meet the Center Staff! Oversight for the Center is provided by a Board of Directors that is composed of approximately 13 diverse and prominent environmental professionals, lawyers and managers. Meet the Center's Board of Directors.

Why Watersheds?
As a particular region of land that drains to a river, river system, or other body of water, a watershed provides the appropriate scale to address the critical natural services that sustain and enrich our daily lives.

Communities around the country have discovered the importance of approaching environmental work at the watershed level. In watersheds all across the country, the Center for Watershed Protection is protecting and restoring these watersheds through helping others help watersheds, finding local watershed solutions, and distilling research into practical tools.  Learn more about the work we do on our Services.
