Become a Master Stormwater Professional

What is a Master Stormwater Professional?
A Master Stormwater Professional (MSP) is the designation of someone who has successfully participated and completed a full range of stormwater training through the Chesapeake Bay Stormwater Training Partnership (CBSTP)

What are the benefits of becoming an MSP?
There are several benefits to becoming a Master Stormwater Practioner. The first is becoming an expert in how to implement stormwater regulations in your state or region as you progress through the tiered training program provided by the CBSTP. These training events include the special two-day intensive “Master” level training session where participants learn about the detailed elements of the stormwater regulations and equally important, how to provide technical training to other stormwater practitioners in the Bay watershed. The MSP certificate will be useful in documenting your professional development, enable you to improve the skills of your staff, and provide a strong marketing advantage in your region.
Second, plan reviewers and managers in local stormwater review agencies will be better prepared to conduct in-house training of staff and the local design community on the new stormwater requirements and compliance tools.
Finally, when you qualify as an MSP, you are eligible to be compensated for conducting stormwater design workshops and providing local technical assistance on behalf of the Partnership, as per the conditions set forth below.

Who is eligible to become an MSP?
Any local stormwater plan reviewer, stormwater designer, stormwater manager, or other individual who has a strong working knowledge of hydrology, hydraulics, and stormwater management design and is interested in enhancing their knowledge and ability to implement innovative stormwater practices is eligible to become an MSP. The potential MSP must also be committed to helping others become more proficient.

What are the requirements for becoming an MSP?
The typical process to qualify as an MSP involves progressing through the three training tiers outlined below. It will be the responsibility of the applicant to keep his or her record on the Training Partnership website up to date with all the completed training events

  • The first step is to acquire a basic understanding of new stormwater requirements and innovative design specifications within your own home state. This can be done by participating in at least five scheduled webcasts, or through self study using the on-line training materials available on this website. Participants who utilize self study will be asked to answer a few short questions after completing an individual module to verify completion.
  • The second step involves participating in a one day local stormwater workshop to become proficient in using the various compliance tools or spreadsheets used in your state, and get more technical information on the proper use and sizing of runoff reduction or site design practices.
  • The third and final step is to attend a two day intensive training seminar where participants are trained on advanced stormwater topics and challenges, and learn the tips and tricks involved in teaching these important concepts to colleagues in the community.

At this point, the MSP should be thoroughly familiar with their new state stormwater requirements, proficient in compliance tools and/or spreadsheets, and well versed in the Bay-wide design specifications.

How do I Become an MSP?
If you are reading this far into the Training Partnership website, then you may have already enrolled as a Partner and taken the initial survey. If not, please do so as this will be the first step in enrolling in the MSP program.

Once you have enrolled you can submit a MSP enrollment application. The MSP enrollment form will ask you to provide some information about your past stormwater experience and unique stormwater specialties, as well as a copy of your resume or curriculum vitae.

Intensive MSE training events are scheduled in every six months or so. The first training session will be held in Stormwater Design track at the
Roof to Bay Stormwater Workshop
to be held on March 9 to 11, 2010 in Staunton, Virginia.

Additional training events, such as webcasts and local workshops can be found on the Calendar
