Local Stormwater Design Workshops are one day workshops held in your community. Local plan reviewers and designers can learn how to implement the new state stormwater requirements on actual development site plans during this interactive “hands-on” workshop. A general agenda for the one-day workshop is provided below; however workshops can also be customized to reflect local conditions and needs. Each workshop will be conducted by a master stormwater practitioner engineer with extensive training on the new stormwater requirements and practices.
The goal of the workshops is to assist local governments to implement the new stormwater strategies by fostering a practical and collaborative understanding of the technical criteria among local plan reviewers and design engineers. Registration is capped at no more than 35 participants to ensure the best learning environment for the workshop.

Who is eligible to host a Local Stormwater Design Workshop?
Any local government plan review and approval authority (including Soil and Water Conservation Districts, Federal Facility Management officials, etc.) located in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia or the District of Columbia is eligible to host a free design workshop. A maximum of 40 stormwater design workshops will be conducted under the grant over the next two years, so apply now to get on the schedule.
How do I apply to host a Stormwater Design Workshop?
See below to apply.
What Does the Chesapeake Stormwater Training Partnership Provide?
The Training Partnership will provide the following for each local stormwater design workshop:
- The Partnership will list the event on the Training Calendar and provide an opportunity for participants to enroll in the partnership and take the initial stormwater survey prior to directing the participant to the host registration.
- One qualified stormwater instructor to lead the workshop. The expert instructor may be drawn from the Center for Watershed Protection, the Chesapeake Stormwater Network, or a Master Stormwater Practitioner. The Training Partnership reserves the right to assign instructors to each local stormwater design workshop.
- A customized workshop agenda: The Training Partnership will work with the local partner to develop a customized version of the workshop agenda (using the standard agenda as a starting point).
- Instructional materials to complete the entire workshop, including presentation modules, sample site plans, magic markers, tracing paper, etc. The workshop host may have to provide supporting materials in consultation with the instructor if a customized workshop agenda deviates too far from the instructional materials prepared by the Partnership.
- An electronic copy of the workshop agenda, evaluation forms and other day-of handouts suitable for copying by the local partners.
- The Training partnership will also post copies of the presentation modules and other workshop materials on the Training Partnership website that can be downloaded by participants.
What must the local host of the free Stormwater Workshop provide?
The workshop host must agree to the following terms and conditions to receive a free stormwater design workshop:
- Designate a liaison person who will work with the Training Partnership state team leader to plan the workshop and be the primary point of contact throughout the planning process.
- Provide a suitable meeting space with comfortable seating for the expected number of participants (max 35) that is also flexible in order to allow participants to break into small groups (4 to 6 people) at tables to work on 24”x36” site plans.
- Provide and distribute copies of the meeting agenda, workshop evaluation, stormwater survey (as needed), and other materials to workshop participants on the day of the workshop.
- Provide a primary laptop and projector (a backup laptop/projector is recommended as well), extension cord, screen, and a flip chart and easel.
- Set up the facility on the day of the workshop.
- Be responsible for all aspects of advance registration, including sending out invitations to the workshop, providing information on the date, time, location and directions to the meeting room.
- Handle on-site registration, sign-in lists, and other day of workshop logistics. The local partner must send the final registration information, the day of workshop sign in list, and workshop evaluation forms to the Training Partnership state team leader within 48 hours of completion of the workshop.
- Make any arrangements for coffee, snacks or lunch, if desired. The financial responsibility for providing any coffee or catering falls on the local partner, who may charge a registration fee to cover the cost. The local partner is solely responsible for handling any funds and disbursing receipts.
