Coastal LID Case Studies
There is a lack of local coastal low impact development (LID) examples to support local communities and help them "get the designs right." The Center for Watershed Protection talked with communities, researchers, and stakeholders to find coastal LID case studies that represent the obstacles, benefits, and local success stories to support LID efforts in your community. Site visits, research, and interviews were conducted to provide designs, cost, monitoring information, pictures, and helpful tips for several project types spanning from Connecticut to Texas. These Coastal Case Studies highlight real world examples of LID implementation projects in coastal areas.
The Coastal Case Studies include a wide range of LID stormwater management practices, obstacles, processes, and levels of detail (e.g., designs, community involvement, monitoring data, and/or financial data). Each case study includes a "Quick Facts" section up front that lists the project theme, name, unique LID components, location, land use, watershed area, and lessons learned. The "Quick Facts" section identifies what will be covered so that you can easily and quickly decide which case studies are most applicable for your community needs. Several Coastal Case Studies include multiple LID projects and sites in the area. Additionally, contact information and additional resources are included so that you can follow up directly with those involved in these projects.
Coastal Case Studies were produced for the following sites (see map below for locations):
- Jordan Cove Urban Watershed Project: Long-Term Monitoring of a Low Impact Development Neighborhood in Waterford, Connecticut
- New York City Greenstreets and Backyard Low Impact Development Projects in New York, New York
- Fairfax County Stormwater Retrofits in Fairfax County, Virginia
- Burnt Mill Creek: Using Stormwater Low Impact Development Retrofits and Community Development to Restore the Watershed in Wilmington, North Carolina
- Oak Terrace Preserve: Redevelopment, Paired Catchment Study, and Outreach in Charleston, South Carolina
- Abercorn Common: Unique Environmental Focus for New Development in Savannah, Georgia
- Lot Level Stormwater Management: A Homeowner's Retrofit Story in Merritt Island, Florida
- Glynn Key Stormwater Wetland: Retrofitting a Dry Stormwater Pond with a Constructed Wetland in Pensacola, Florida
- Brays Bayou Marsh at Mason Park: A Constructed Wetland to Improve Water Quality in Houston, Texas.
Photos for various LID stormwater management practices and these case study site visits were posted online on the Flickr! photo library of LID practices in the coastal plain. This platform allows tagging, file share, project promotion through online communities, and online discussions within each LID category by the user(s). The objective for online photo albums is to show examples and provide photos for end-users to incorporate into their own presentations, trainings, or reports. The Coastal Case Studies were readily incorporated into the Coastal Plain Outreach Materials provided on this site.
Thanks to all the contributors for each case study for your time during site visits and follow up correspondences that made these case studies possible!
