Watershed & Stormwater Services

The Center's work is based on scientific research, practical field experience, publications that define and illustrate our approach, and partnerships with communities around the country to provide sound watershed management strategies and improve the integration of local watershed and stormwater programs. Recognized as the nation's leading stormwater clearinghouse, the Center is known for distilling stormwater research, developing state and regional stormwater design manuals, and helping NPDES MS4 communities build appropriate stormwater programs. We believe, however, that good stormwater management--both construction and post-construction--is only one piece of a more holistic program needed to effectively manage local water resources. We have extensive experience in evaluating a community's watershed management capacity through local program and regulatory audits that identify gaps and opportunities to ultimately minimize the impacts of urbanization at the watershed scale. To this end, the Center provides a full range of watershed & stormwater services including:

  • Codes and Ordinances Review
  • Comprehensive Planning
  • Modeling
  • Regulatory Compliance with NPDES, TMDLs
  • Restoration Planning
  • Stormwater Services
  • Stormwater Design Manuals
  • Watershed Planning Services

Our staff has extensive experience in assessing watershed conditions in the field, evaluating local environmental ordinances and programs, and crafting restoration and protection strategies for small watersheds.  We have worked with more than 50 communities across the country to protect salmon, trout, wetlands, drinking water, stream habitat, lakes, swimming beaches and other important resources from land development.  We have prepared plans to meet the many different objectives that drive local and state watershed planning efforts (e.g. TMDLs, NPDES, and local comprehensive plans), while maintaining a strong track record in producing high quality plans rapidly and cost-effectively.  In each case, we have applied and refined the tools and techniques originally advanced in our Rapid Watershed Planning Manual and Urban Subwatershed Restoration Manual Series.
